How To Go About Choosing The Perfect CMSHow To Go About Choosing The Perfect CMS

CMS (content management systems) are software platforms or systems that allow you to build websites and manage content in a structured way. With these, you can create and maintain you own community website, blog, e-commerce site or any other website. There are many such paid and open source systems available. Depending on your unique needs, you can choose a suitable CMS.

Here are some aspects you should consider when selecting a CMS:

Intuitive user interface: You should evaluate if the program's backend is intuitive enough for you. Is the configuring process simple or are you finding it confusing and difficult to comprehend? If the latter holds true, then you should have good enough reasons to invest your time in figuring the system out. The idea behind CMS (content management systems) is to make the content management user interface as intuitive as possible, so that even newbies find it simple to understand and use. If something as basic as changing menu items of your site's frontend is giving you a headache, then it is time to reconsider your choice of content management system.

Navigation: It is one of the most important aspects to consider. The software's frontend and backend navigation should be intuitive and make sense easily. Some content management systems come with great features but offer poor navigation, so make sure that the system you choose does not compromise on this factor.

Website templates: Most of the time, the CMS website template is not perfect, but workable. If the navigation elements and columns are driving you crazy, then you should look for alternate templates. It's best to get some ready to use templates for the CMS you have selected, as creating one from scratch can be very effort intensive. So, select a CMS for which good website templates are easily available.

Easily allows add-ons: Try to choose CMS that allow add-ons easily. It should be as convenient as, you download the modules/plug-ins, unzip and upload them directly onto the system. Joomla and Drupal are generally good to work with in this respect. If you are looking to create and maintain a personal blog then it is best to go for a program that is cleaner, simpler and by default, does not come with too many add-ons. Wordpress, for example is ideal for this purpose. The idea is to look for that perfect program that comes with the right features for your particular website.

Many CMS (content management systems) are open source, that is they are available for free to download and use. But the drawback of many open source CMS is that they do not come with very high quality documentation, which may make them difficult to get started with. When you choose a CMS, make sure that it has sufficient documentation and guides on how to use it. For blogs, Wordpress, Textpattern, Serendipity, BirdBlog, b2evolution, boastMachine are some popular CMS. PHP-Nuke, Joomla, Mambo, BitWeaver and Drupal are the popular platforms for content rich portals. 4Images, Gallery, PixelPost are some of the commonly used image gallery CMS, while bbPress, Beehive and XMB are some systems you can consider for forums.
