Everyone wants to save money, but finding ways to cut back on your expenses isn't always easy. Many think that saving money on groceries means forcing your family to do without, however, with a few simple tips you can start saving money on food keep your family happy and healthy.

First off, think of shopping for groceries kind of like shopping for a new car. It sounds a little out there, but if you put the same effort into finding the best deals on food as you would on finding the best deal on a car, you can really save some dough. Lots of people get caught up in the routine of going to the same grocery store every time they need a few items. While some grocery stores may have good deals on certain items, the most definitely will not have good deals on all items. Take some time and shop around, you may find it better do get your meats at one store, your produce at another, and snack items somewhere else. You'll be surprised at how much money shopping around for your groceries can save you.

Secondly, don't be afraid to use coupons and sign up for rewards/discount programs. Grocery stores offer coupons and rewards cards as a way to gain new customers by saving them money on groceries. This is something that everyone should take advantage of. Check out you Sunday newspaper or other ad papers that you usually just toss in the trash, you would be shocked at how much money you are throwing away. There may not be coupons for every single item on your list, but you can definitely combine coupons and shopping around to really rack up on your savings.

Finally, if you find a great deal, buy your non-perishable and freezable items in bulk. Items like canned vegetables, produce such as peppers or onions, and meats can all be bought in bulk and stored for long periods of time. Canned foods are obvious, but for items like peppers and onions, just simply wash and slice or dice them, place them in freezer bags, and you will have pre-cut peppers and onions ready to sauté with your next meal. For meat items, again, just buy them in bulk, separate into single portions, and freeze for later use. Buying food items in bulk is a great way to start saving money on groceries, especially when combined with the two tips mentioned above.

Saving money on groceries isn't about forcing your family to do without...it's about giving them more of what the want and need for less. True, it will require a little bit of effort on your part, but it will pay off when you realize that your grocery bill has been cut in half. Convenience is not a necessity, but living well within your means is.
