Gaming has always attracted kids as well as adults alike over the years. We have seen the technology change from video games to computers, to gaming consoles and finally to the latest mobile phones in the market. With the rise of Smartphones, it has evolved into various new levels. The foremost graphic version include ‘OXO’, a replication of the ‘Noughts and Crosses’, was the first digital computer game to be developed in 1952. ‘Computer Space’ became the first video game to hit the commercial markets, which utilized the black and white television display. The 2D Game Development came into existence during the mid 1980s and early 90s. The 2D computer graphics were previously based on vector graphics and later it was replaced by raster-based devices.

Some of the main aspects of 2-dimensional gaming include-
-    Utilizing the homogeneous coordinates
-    Direct painting- based on the graphic card or graphic library, various programs sets pixel colors
-    Color modeling for rendering shapes, texts, and lines
-    Using layered models or commonly known as 2½-D computer graphics
-    Making use of the 2D graphics hardware as well as software.
-    Profiting from developmental animation

The 2D games made its advancements to mobile phones by 1997, where the Nokia model 6110 introduced a Black and White version of ‘Snake’, until 2001, where the color versions hit the commercial markets. With the mobile pastime gaining hype, there have been incredible developments in the networking capacities. Even though a multi-player mode was available in the older phones, the data was transferred at regular intervals from the server. Now it’s enhanced using the real-time server based network which helps in building much more interactive and complex games. The modern mobile phone games can be categorized into 3 main groups- Messaging mobile type, online mobile versions, and downloadable games. With much advancement in game engine technology, which generates and develops the same, various Smartphone game development applications have been created for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile. 2 of the most popular 2D game engines are cocos2d and iTGB for 2D Games. The 2D Game Development process include – Key animation, Special effects, Music creation, animation Compilation, Voice over and Integration, Story, Character and Background outline, making characters and backgrounds active, analyzing, finding errors and refreshing. The game buffs suggests the following as the most popular ones available on smartphones- Angry Birds, Bran Challenge, Doodle Jump, Asphalt 5, Fruit Ninja, etc.
