How To Save Money When Shopping For HalloweenHow To Save Money When Shopping For Halloween

For many families, Halloween is the kick off to the holiday season that starts on that cool, October evening and culminates to the festivities on New Year's Eve. These are the people who are far more likely to overspend for Halloween, on everything from décor to costumes to candy and other treats. Before you break the bank, here are some tips to shave off some of the cost.

Tip One: Take Every Advantage As It Comes to You

Start shopping for the season way before it arrives. If you spot a sale on yards of lacy black material, buy it and put it back, it can be the start of a great costume or perfect for draping over tables, lamps and windows for a spooky effect. Likewise for candles- if you see orange, black, or red candles on sale, buy them and store them away. Remember to buy extra orange because they can transition to Thanksgiving decorations after Halloween is over. (The same goes for orange Halloween lights.)

If you live in an area where frequent yard sales, garage sales or tag sales are the norm, then take advantage of those. You can often find cast off Halloween costumes for every member of the family, (often including the pooch) that have little to no wear at all. Even if you have to replace some of the accessories, you are still far ahead of the game. This is also a great way to find great Halloween decorations for a steal.

Shop after Halloween is over and store your bargains for next year. Starting on the night of Halloween and usually for a few days afterward, stores will put all of their items on sale for huge discounts so that they can make room for the next batch of holiday items.

Tip Two: Use What You Have on Hand

Halloween costumes are not always about the latest pre-packaged item from the latest movie. There are often the basics of great costumes lurking in your closet- the stuff in the way back that you never wear for one reason or another. A black dress can be the start of a vampire or witch costume. A red dress can be the start of Red Riding Hood or a devil. Add a purchased cape, some fangs or horns and you are good to go.

For Décor: pull out those atrocious black sheets and drape them over tables, adding strips of pulled apart cotton batting for a spider web effect. Slip a white pillow case over an inflated balloon and you have a ghost. Let the kids make bats and spiders out of black paper.

Tip Three: Buy Bulk Candy and little Toys

While shopping at the yard sales, you might come across a family that has a zillion fast food toys, still in packaging for an insanely low price. Make a deal for the whole lot of them and keep them back to add to the treat bags, meaning you will need far less candy to round out the bag. Buy bulk candy, comparing prices for each item.

You don't have to spend a fortune for a fabulous Halloween, after all the price tag should not be the scariest thing about the affair!
