Do's And Don'ts After RhinoplastyDo's And Don'ts After Rhinoplasty

To hasten recovery after rhinoplasty, one should be responsible for maintaining himself free from infection and other post-surgical complications. The following are helpful tips on what to do and what should not be done after a nose surgery:

The Do's

1. Do practice deep breathing exercises. The anesthesia being used during rhinoplasty causes your lung muscles to relax. Prolonged relaxation of the lung can lead to serious diseases such as lung collapse. Once awake and nasal packing is removed, you should do deep-breathing exercises. This is done by slowly inhaling though your nose and exhaling through your mouth with your lips in 'o" form. Do this while in a sitting position.

2. Do include protein-rich foods and Vitamin-C in your diet. Protein promotes healing together with vitamin C. Foods that are rich in protein include meat products and beans. Oranges and mango are some of the common fruits that are rich in vitamin C. You can also take ascorbic acid supplement to boost your immune system and prevent post-surgical infection.

3. Do take prescribed post-surgical medications religiously. Certain drugs are given by your doctor after the surgery. Common drugs given are dexamethasone and homeopathic medications. These drugs reduce swelling of the nose and bruising. Continue taking your medications as prescribed; do not terminate any medication without seeking your doctor's advice.

4. Do live a healthy lifestyle. Do not let post-surgical condition hinder you from doing your activities of daily living. Socializing with peers and relatives is an effective way of gaining self-esteem after having a change in physical appearance.

The Don'ts

1. Don't blow your nose. After rhinoplasty, nasal congestion can occur which will cause ineffective airway clearance. Taking a decongestant is recommended by a doctor to promote ease in breathing. Do not blow your nose as this might disrupt the nasal lining and may add injury to the healing surgical wound. After three to five weeks, sneezing or blowing of the nose can not cause major problem.

2. Don't eat foods that cause you allergies. Nuts and shellfish are common food allergens. Allergic reaction may include constant sneezing and nasal congestion which might interrupt proper healing after a nose job. Keep away from dust and smoke which can also trigger sneezing.

3. Don't take aspirin and other medications that interfere with blood clotting. Aspirin can cause delay in recovery and promote massive blood loss. If it is a maintenance drug that you are taking for other health problem, ask your doctor when is the best time to resume taking them.

4. Don't smoke. Cigarette smoking can affect the healing process after rhinoplasty. Avoid smoking for a period of three to six weeks after surgery to allow full recovery.

Remember, your aim for a nose reshape is to improve physical appearance. This goal did not end at the hands of the surgeon. You should take full responsibility in maintaining yourself healthy throughout the period of recovery. This is done simply by avoiding factors that can obstruct healing and doing those that promote recuperation. Beauty is best achieved by maintaining a healthy body. Cosmetic surgery is just one of the steps to achieve self-actualization and it should not be a hindrance to enjoy life at its fullest.
