Different Ways To Use Metal BuildingsDifferent Ways To Use Metal Buildings

Metal buildings are surprisingly versatile in function. They are used for storage, agriculture, retail, churches, schools, on floating surfaces for marine use, and for homes. Most are quick to erect and can be taken apart and used at a different location or simply recycled.

They also have an advantage over wood or brick structures in that they are easier to enlarge and are cheaper to build and maintain. Constructed from steel, they are resistant to termites and other pests. They also stand up to wind, fire, snow, and earthquakes better than the traditionally constructed buildings. Galvanized steel is salt and rust resistant. They can also be special ordered to withstand hurricane winds of up to 170 mph.

During World War II, the need for barracks and maintenance shelters that could be constructed quickly and shipped easily brought about the development of Quonset huts. These structures could be bolted-up with no welding required. The curved or arch shaped sheets of the Quonset huts were stacked easily on top of each other and placed in containers for shipping.

The pre-punched sheets were fastened with nuts and bolts to the foundation or a trough was dug and filled with cement once the sheet was put into place. Because they could be assembled without cranes, special tools, or heavy equipment, they were perfect for remote areas. The open ends also allow heavy winds to pass through them.

Today, they are still inexpensive and quick to erect. Many homes have a storage shed or workshop made of metal in the back yard. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Made of sturdy construction, they are great for storing gardening tools and landscape equipment, overflow decorations, boxes and unused furniture.

The home workshop can be prefabricated or constructed by using I beams. The prefabricated models require a slab flooring, while those using the I beams can be placed on top of dirt. Auto work, wielding, wood working, appliance, and office space are a few of the uses for these buildings.

The agricultural business has been using these buildings for decades. Superior shelter is important for shielding livestock, grain, crops and farm equipment. The prefabricated buildings protect from the elements. They have replaced the wood barns we traditionally associate with farms.

Kits are available for building your dream home. These are not mobile homes but actual houses built on a slab using steel frames and studs to hold it together. Because they are constructed from steel, the frame is fire resistant. In addition, there are no nutrients for pest or mold to feed and grow on. Also, a homeowner can design a house with more open spaces because of the structural strength of the metal.

Metal buildings are here to stay. At first it was thought they were only for industrial and any non-residential use. Due to the introduction of computer design and analysis, modern engineering has developed designs that are used everywhere, including residential homes. Add their versatility to their low cost and life span, it is easy to understand why they are becoming a permanent fixture.
