The safety of your drinking water is as important as ensuring the safety of your foods. Contaminated water can give rise to different diseases because of the contained germs and health hazards. Is there any way to have your tap water protected? The answer to this is the backflow preventer.

The role of backflow preventers is explicit; these are protection from the backflow of the dirty water into the source. Water system service providers typically make sure that the water from the source are clean, thus, some chemicals are added to keep the water free from bacteria and hazardous elements. There is no problem when the water flows from the source directly to the faucets. However, when the water flows from the clean source and goes back to this original source, the water becomes contaminated. The backflow preventers are the crucial equipments to prevent this to happen.

A backflow preventer

Backflow preventers work just as their name implies; they prevent backflow. When water flows from a source, it typically has chemicals added to ensure that the water is clean and free from bacteria or other hazardous material. However, when water leaves a purified source, and flows back into its original direction, it will become polluted and contaminated. Backflow preventers are critical in preventing this process to happen. The backflow preventer is a device that will prevent water from flowing back to its main source.

There are two main causes of water backflow. These are backpressure and backsiphonage. Backpressure is a result of pressure building up due to an increase of substances in the system. This hinders the ability of water to circulate properly and causes the water to flow backwards. On the other hand, the backsiphonage is the result of the dropping of the water pressure which eventually leads to the flowing of water back to the origin.  This result is called siphoning of the contaminants into the water. This backsiphoning happens because of the increase in the demand for water supply. What is left now to the homeowner is to institute maintenance of the backflow preventer in order to prevent either of these two causes.

In the maintenance of this preventer, there are a number of parts that had to be safeguarded, components that need to be properly functional. Such parts include pressure regulators, gate and ball valves, thermal expansion tanks, enclosures and strainers. Once installed, there is a need to test the backflow preventer and this is done through the use of backflow testing kits.

Because of the complexity of the maintenance of backflow preventers, it is paramount that you should only have a licensed professional plumber do the installation of the preventer. The installer had to be certified for the purpose.
