Accessorize Your PergolaAccessorize Your Pergola

A pergola in itself is already a statement piece on any patio, lawn or garden. Still, it doesn’t hurt to embellish it just a little more for that added pizzazz or function.

Vines, creepers and other plants

Popular pergola companions are vines and creepers: Climbing roses, clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine, grape vines, or solanum. They give off a sweet scent especially when a cool breeze passes through. Makes the space conducive to solitude and meditation.

You can also have herbs planted in mason jars or repurposed cans fastened to the supports as part of the pergola design. Another option is small palm trees positioned beside each wooden support to lend a tropical feel.

Lights, lamps and lanterns

Lighting contributes to the desired ambiance and mood. A string of fairy lights bring adds a touch of whimsy. If you want a more oriental look, hang Japanese or paper lanterns from the lattice roof of your pergola.

DIY glass lamps or small wrought iron lamps either give your pergola a modern or gothic look. Tube lighting can go around the supports or along the lattice roof. This kind of lighting is excellent as Christmas decoration.

Votive candles on pillar sconce or candles inside glass jars provide a more romantic mood.

Balustrades and pillars

If you want to create a small play area for kids, a pergola can be converted into one by simply adding balustrades around it. To get a Grecian effect, use pillars instead of the usual pergola support. Pillars are ideal especially for really wide pergola plans. You can opt for tall, slim pillars or wide ones; either plain or with embossed designs.

Curtains, drapes, and screens

When hung and gathered at the middle then drawn to the side of the pergola, curtains or drapes create a Mediterranean atmosphere, especially if the curtains used bear middle-eastern designs. Satin or silk drapes can be hung around a pergola if it’s to be used as a wedding altar. Sheer or lacy curtains evoke mystery and sensuality.

Swings, chairs and tables

What’s a pergola without some outdoor furniture? A small coffee table and comfortable throw pillows around it creates an instant private haven where you can read alone or simply meditate. A table and two seats turn it into an instant al fresco dining area for lunch for two or intimate dinner in the evenings. A hammock or a swing or a hanging bed at the center turns it into a cool napping place.

Other embellishments

Transform you pergola into a display area of your kids’ artwork or your sculptures or your old garden implements that still hold sentimental value. If your pergola is used with an outdoor kitchen, hang beautifully embroidered pot holders on the supports. And to create shock effect, paint the supports in different colors or paint the whole structure in different shades of one color. A splash of paint can liven up a very traditional wood brown color.

There are hundreds of possibilities and options on how to embellish a pergola. It just takes some imagination and effort.
