Publishing is an industry that has been around for a long time, every country and city has several publications, this could be in terms of newspapers, magazines, newsletters and even websites and e-newsletters. Setting up a publication takes a lot of time and a systematic plan needs to be made to start one and keep it afloat. The past few years, several newspapers publications have shut due to the onslaught of websites and e-papers. Business consultants can help these companies to start up and stay successful in the market.

Business consultants can help both new and old publications to stay successful and enhance and keep their readership levels. Newspapers are being published from a longer duration; they have been in the market for a longer duration. Keeping these businesses running takes a lot of time, a business consultant can help these papers to increase their readership by marketing tactics.

A publishing consultant usually helps to create a business plan, let us take an example of a magazine; in the past decade many magazines have been started covering newer trends such as gaming, music and technology. Setting up a magazine takes a lot of money and the plan needs to be tailor made to the niche. A business plan should be able to explain the different departments and the cost it would take to set these up. Let’s take for instance the content and editorial teams, these are the individuals who write and edit the articles, depending on the genre of the magazine; a team should be made with at least 20 individuals.

Individuals need to be provided with computers and Internet connections. Software would have to be bought for all these computers. The other major department is that of publications, this department deals with making the layout and giving into the printing department. The software for this department is expensive; printing the magazine involves purchasing printers and other ancillary equipment. Running the printing factory involves hiring individuals to run the equipment and maintain it, this part of the publication is costly and time consuming.

Running the publication on a day to day basis also takes a lot of money, while pitching for investments, the plan needs to explain the different costs that the publication with incur. Each department within the organisation has sub departments with heads. Ideally in a magazine, there are departments for each section of the magazine, lets take a sports magazine there would be sections for each sport tennis, cricket, football and so on. Each of these departments has heads and sub-heads or sub-writers. The pay packages depend on the level each individual has within the department. Salaries would have to be paid to all of them.

A magazine is released either monthly or fortnightly, depending on the number of issues in a month the organisations costs would increase. Sales and marketing departments are also setup, which engage in publicity activities, popularising the magazine or publication is a must, a business consultants help in creating a sales pitch, this is usually given to an advertising agency which comes up with the creative execution of the advertisement.

A business consultant can help making a publication successful; they can help in acquiring funding, publicity and advertising of the publication and can help in managing the day-to-day managerial activities of a publication. Setting up a business plan is a must while starting a publication; this can help the organisation to perform effectively. A publications consultant can help publications to stay afloat. With the onslaught of newer mediums, traditional magazines and newspaper publications are closing across the globe. Staying afloat is a must for these publications. A business consultant can help my providing business solutions.
