Public relations, or PR as it is most commonly known, relates to the practice of regulating the information that the public is exposed to about a company or organisation. The information in question can be anything from news stories to scandals, advertising campaigns to image management. The world of public relations is something that has become vitally important to businesses and the need to ensure a company is represented in the best light with a good public image has led to the creation of PR agencies. Ultimately it is the job of the PR agency to regulate the press coverage the company it represents receives. This means that any positive information is emphasised and any negative press or coverage is diminished. When PR is effective, it allows for a good relationship of trust to be built not only with different companies but also with companies and the public.

There are two different types of PR:

>In- house PR

>PR agencies

In-House PR is when a business has a department within the company that deals with public relations and public relations only. PR agencies are used when the company outsources the work to a separate company.  Some companies use both in-house PR whilst also outsourcing work to a separate PR agency, this demonstrates just how crucial public relations is to a business – after all who wants to associate with a business who has a negative public image?

PR agencies can be found in many different cities across the world, and the UK is no different with many PR agencies in London. The different agencies tend to focus on specific sectors to work within for example agencies who work with music and media companies or in retail and consumer sectors. Examples of work which a PR agency in London might do are:

-       Promote the company by getting information to appear in the media, for example on websites or on television programmes.

-       Have in place a crisis strategy to be able to deal with any issues or problems which may occur effectively and quickly.

-       Provide the company with a good public opinion.

-       Manage events which the company may host or be invited to.

-       Ensure the client is well established within social media, again ensuring they have a solid representation and are seen to be tweeting, blogging or posting on facebook frequently.

All these tasks are what you could expect if you hired a PR agency, London to New York, they all work to achieve the same goal, promote companies, businesses or individuals.

Although public relations is extremely important for businesses, it is also crucial for those individuals working in the public eye – mainly celebrities. After all, their whole career is based on their public perception and image and so therefore many will have a team specifically for public relations.

The world of public relations is something that has been around for many many years and it becomes easy to see how and why public relations has become such an integral part of businesses and companies.
