Fixing The Fixing The "Fatal Error" With Scanning Software

Computer troubles can always be distressing, especially during those moments when we couldn't figure out what to do to fix them. Despite the user-friendliness of the Windows operating system, it still has that habit of spewing out complicated error codes that leave us at a loss.

Perhaps some of you who have spent some time in front of a computer would recognize these error lines:

"ntkrnlpa.exe irql_power_state_failure"

"ntkrnlpa.exe page_fault_in_nonpaged_area"

"DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x0000009f 0x00000003 0x86036690 0x8078adb0 0x85e33008 ntkrnlpa.exe"

These are just segments of some error messages that appear with the infamous BSOD (or Blue Screen of Death) issue. Seeing the above line in any message would mean that there is damage to one of the core components of your operating system. Many people would immediately take their PCs to a technician after seeing such messages. However, handling this error by yourself need not be so difficult.

The ntkrnlpa.exe "BSOD" usually occurs in many instances. Most people see it when the computer enters sleep mode, or when the system wakes up. There are also those who see it a minute or two after using any of the USB ports.

First off, we have to understand the origin of the problem. The ntkrnlpa.exe on XP and Vista is used by the system to execute the service called "NT Kernel & System" for the processes "msdt.exe" and "rundll32.exe". You might recognize the second process, which in itself also appears quite frequently among different error messages. A "dll" or dynamic link library is a group of files that can be shared among different applications, allowing these programs to work. If the system cannot find the correct dll file, some programs may not be able to access specific parts of the computer's memory.

Also, "ntkrnlpa" is used to support the different device drivers in the computer system.

One of the most common ways to fix the problem with the executable is to delve into the sensitive Windows registry. Sometimes, as we go about installing and uninstalling various types of applications, these registry files get bloated and eventually become defragmented. This can easily lead to data overload and data corruption, bearing with it damages in registry files, among them the ntkrnlpa.exe file.

The corruption could also be catalyzed by malicious programs such as an ntkrnlpa virus, malware, and other such file types that directly attack similar registry entries. Thus, fixing it is one of the steps in repairing the ntkrnlpa.exe BSOD error on XP, Vista, or 7.

Once you have this error, there are three different programs that you can install and run to help you restore your PC back into top shape:

l "DLL" fix tool. Some websites in the net offer programs that can scan your registry for broken and missing system files. These programs can download DLLs for you, resolving the issue. However, be careful when selecting which sites to download from since more malicious software can piggyback on these applications, further complicating the issue.

l Antivirus and Antimalware programs. Several well-known antivirus programs are available online, and you can download freeware versions of these. Most of the time, these software should be able to pick up any malicious program damaging your registry. Deleting these viruses or malware can restore the system to its previous state. Of course, make sure to be careful when deleting these unwanted bits of code, as vital files may be removed along with them. Some scan tools have the ability to distinguish between vital and non-vital files.

One downside to this is that antivirus programs are known for slowing systems down, especially a damaged one. Hence, they should be run separately from the other tools listed here.

l Registry cleaners. Though these are also notorious for causing registry errors when used recklessly, they can also be handy in a pinch. Registry cleaners work by removing registry entries that are related to non-existent (uninstalled) applications. This way, the system can easily sort out the other useful files.

Aside from these, there are also those "all-in-one" applications that have the functionality of all these programs. Though they are worth a try, there are versions of these applications that cannot compare to their standalone counterparts. Regardless of these, they can be useful when figuring out the correct troubleshooting steps required for your BSOD issue.

In the end, nothing beats the periodic maintenance. A vast majority (if not all) computer problems can be avoided with proper care. This would include scrutinizing the sites you download your files from, as well as carefully checking the programs that you install.
