What You Should Know Before Getting Breast ImplantsWhat You Should Know Before Getting Breast Implants

Breast augmentation is a very personal thing. The reasons for needing or wanting implants are as varied as each individual’s personality. But whether the surgery is requested for medical reasons or for cosmetic enhancement, it’s important to recognize that the procedure is still surgical. And with all surgeries, there are some potential risks to be aware of.

Pain—Obviously after an invasive surgical procedure like breast augmentation, reshaping, lifting or reconstruction, there is going to be a recovery period in which the breasts will be sore, swollen, bruised and sensitive. However, a condition called capsular contracture can occur as scar tissue forms around the implant and starts to squeeze it. This can be caused by infection or inflammation and generally creates tightness in the breast, changes in the shape of the breast, and mild to severe pain.

Rupture—Implants can and do breakdown over time. The longer you have your implants, the more likely they will rupture or deflate for one reason or another. Causes can include compression during a mammogram, physical stress to the breast such as trauma or intense physical pressure, breast feeding, and normal aging of the implant. In any case, once an implant is ruptured or starts to leak, it will need to be removed (and potentially replaced if that option appeals to you). Be aware that if you do not have the implant replaced or cannot have it replaced for medical reasons, you may experience changes to your natural breast such as dimpling, puckering, wrinkling, breast tissue loss, and other undesirable cosmetic changes.

Maladies—Other problems that can occur include: calcium build-up in the breast tissue, extrusion (where the implant appears through the skin), hematoma (where blood collects at the incision), infection (including Toxic Shock Syndrome), necrosis (dead skin or tissue around the incision site), scarring, seroma (a collection of fluid around the implant), and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes. These are just a few of the more common problems.

Although modern surgical techniques make the chances of any of these thing minor (except in the case of something unpredictable, like trauma), it’s still important to know all the potential risks before making your decision to get implants.
