3 Famous Flower Festivals In The World3 Famous Flower Festivals In The World

Did you know smelling fresh flowers can change your brain chemistry and make you feel more positive? Researchers across the world have found that flowers make us creative, help relieve stress, and lift our spirits. That is probably why cultures across the world dedicate an entire festival in their honor. If you are a fan of flowers, we list three festivals you shouldn’t miss.

Pasadena Rose Parade:

The Pasadena Rose Parade or the Tournament of Rose Parade is held in California on New Year’s Day or on the 2nd of January if New Year falls on a Sunday. This is a part of a celebration intended to welcome the New Year and is followed by a football game. The parade was first held in 1890 when members of the Valley Hunt Club wanted to show off the mild and moderate climate during that time of the year. This was in comparison to some of the states in the East Coast that were buried in snow. The theme this year was ‘making a difference’ with each float visually depicting how things can change for the better in the world.

Feria de Las Flores, Medellin:

The Feria de Las Flores, Medellin is an 11-day annual festival that first began in 1957 as a five-day flower display at the Cathedral Basilica Metropolitana. Not long ago, saddle-men or silleros carried Spanish masters on wicker chairs called silleteros mounted on their back. The silleros had to walk across the Quindio pass in the Columbian Andes carrying anywhere up to 200 pounds. This practice was considered inhuman and was gradually discontinued. The Feria de Las Florence is celebrated to honor this ban. Today, instead of people, silleros carry flower arrangements across the street, with the best flower display winning the awards for the best sillero in the country.  The event attracts thousands of people every year and is now an important part of Medellin living.

The Genzano Infiorata Flower Festival, Italy:

Infiorata festivals are held across Italy around May and June every year and is a popular tourist attraction. If you are around Italy during the infiorata season, don’t miss the one in Genzano, a small town close to Rome. The flower display in Genzano takes place after the feast of the Corpus Christi. Hundreds of miles are converted into a flower carpet using around 500,000 flowers and blooms. The festival ends when the Corpus Domini procession passes down the carpet and children are allowed to run down from the stairs of the Santa Maria and undo the entire arrangement.
