How Safe Is Your Hospital? How Safe Is Your Hospital?

Every day we make choices about where we shop, where to dine out, what cars we drive, and the list never ends, it goes on and on. Despite our consumer culture, some people are not even aware that they can choose what hospital they go to.

The choice of your hospital could be a life or a death decision. Hospitals nationwide vary significantly on factors like surgical errors, infection rates, and patient injuries and not to mention ER wait times, and patient satisfaction. Choosing the right hospital for your family doesn’t have to be a daunting task, as long as you have the right tools.

Your first step in choosing a facility for you and your family is finding a safer hospital. Use the American hospital directory to find the safest health care in your area, preferably one with an A grade.

What is an American hospital directory?

The American hospital directory by State is a hospital directory that provides hospital ratings and reviews of all major hospitals and surgical centers in the U.S. The directory aggregates reviews on each medical facility, as well as the reviews and metrics aggregated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services.

Things to know about hospital directory

The directory helps you make informed choices when it comes to choosing a facility for surgery or any other procedure. These directories may use different types of data in their rankings including

- Patient’s experience – Patient’s opinions about the healthcare they received in a particular facility

- Process measures – Give information about how many patients get the care they needed for their condition.

- Outcome Measures – Shows how well they are doing after the procedure

- Patient safety measures – It shows how a patient is affected by hospital-acquired infections.

Now, you have to think about what type of care you and your family needs. Are you getting ready to have a baby? Does your child need surgery? And so on. If your family member needs surgery, you should compare the mortality rates of high-risk procedures. If you are pregnant, you should find out how comfortable the hospital is for you and how the facility does in maternity care like C-section and handling high-risk deliveries.

Don’t just consider the patient’s experience ratings alone. Use the information to help you decide. Talk to your doctors, visit the hospital, and find out the best hospital that is covered by your insurance plan.
