When food debris gets trapped between teeth and they are not removed with routine brushing and flossing, tooth decay happens. This is where bacteria eats away at the tooth, creating small holes called cavities. When left untreated, these holes grow bigger and eventually destroy the whole tooth. The major culprits are sticky, sugary foods and drinks. The more sugar is consumed, the more acid is produced, leading to tooth decay.

Loss of Dentin: Contributing Factors

  • Sticky and sugary foods and drinks – Food items that stick to the teeth are mostly likely to cause dentin loss and tooth decay. Sugary and starchy foods promote plaque; examples include hard candy, raisons, milk, dry cereal, bread and honey.
  • Frequent snacking – Although some diets suggest consuming several small meals a day to maintain or lose weight, frequent eating can give the acid in the food more time to inflict damage on your teeth. It this cannot be prevented, brush your teeth after eating. Aside from helping remove plaque, you will also be less likely to snack.
  • Receding gums – Receding gums promote plaque formation near the roots of the teeth. These areas are not protected by enamel, making the dentin vulnerable to damage.

The most common and most effective treatment for dentin loss is filling, which has shown to be very effective in stopping the cavity from getting bigger. Anyone who is experiencing any signs of cavity or tooth decay should immediately see a dentist to get treatment as soon as possible. Using fluoride-rich products can also help. Fluoride can help strengthen and rebuild the weak spots of your teeth before they can have a chance to develop into a cavity.

Loss of Dentin: Prevention Tips

  • Maintain a healthy diet, avoiding specifically sugary foods and beverages, to lessen the amount of bacteria feeling in your mouth.
  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps prevent demineralization, or mineral loss of the tooth. It also speeds up the remineralization process if the tooth has cavities.
  • Practice daily flossing to help remove food particles and plaque from in between your teeth and other places where a toothbrush cannot reach.
  • Go on regular checkups with your dentist for routine examination and cleaning, at least every six months.
  • Regularly change your toothbrush every three months. Worn-out bristles can make plaque harder to remove.
  • Consider getting sealants to protect the tooth surface from acids and plaque, particularly the pits and grooves of your molars.
  • Take fluoride supplements to better protect your teeth from bacteria and cavities. Use a fluoride rinse daily or add fluoride to your drinking water.

Although children are more known to develop cavities, adults can get them as well, mostly on the tooth surfaces between the teeth. Teeth that are tightly spaced can make it hard to remove plaque in between them. Also, exposed root surfaces among people with gum recession can also be a breeding ground for bacteria to foster. To prevent dentin loss, see your dentist twice a year for routine checkups and professional cleaning.
