Dental health is more important than most people realize. It has a big influence in your overall health. In fact, your oral health gives some important clues on what is happening on the rest of your body. A few lifestyle choices, like nutritional imbalance, smoking, alcohol drinking, physical inactivity, and sleep shortage can hurt your oral health. This is why aside from good oral hygiene, you should also make the right lifestyle choices. 

Below are six lifestyle changes that greatly improve your dental and overall health. 

Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco 

Tobacco also creates an environment in the mouth for bacteria and plaque to thrive, harming the tissues and bones that support the teeth. Alcoholcauses dental problems by making the mouth dehydrated. Cocktails are also harmful because they contain large amounts of sugar. 

Change your Diet and Cut Back on Sugar 

A diet high in sugar contributes to cavities, tooth decay and gum problems by increasing acidity and bacterial growth in the mouth. reduce your sugar intake by avoiding sugary snacks and sweetened drinks. Also brush and floss after every meal or snack, especially if they have sugar. Aside from cutting back on sugar, also make some changes in your diet. Here are food items recommended to improve oral health: leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and plain yogurt. 

Limit Coffee and Sodas 

These beverages are actually good for dental health because they contain high levels of phosphorous – for as long as they are consumed in small amounts. Too high amounts of phosphorous beats the calcium in the body, giving rise to dental issues like tooth decay and gum disease. Coffee and sodas also contain harmful additives like corn syrups and food dyes that can discolor teeth. Rather than reach for these drinks, go with milk instead. Milk builds strong enamel and strengthens teeth for a beautiful, healthy smile.

 Take Vitamins and Supplements 

Your teeth needs lots of calcium to stay strong and look healthy. This is why drinking milk and consuming dairy products like cheese and yogurt every day is essential. Calcium supplements can also help. Vitamin D and calcium ensures healthy teeth and gums, while vitamin B-complex supplements protect them from cracking and bleeding. Taking copper, iron, iodine, magnesium, potassium, and zinc are important, as well as food supplements like cod liver oil and coconut oil. 

Balance Your Hormones 

Many people are not aware that hormones play a huge role in oral health. For one, they control the acid-alkaline balance in the mouth. Also, hormones affect the way the body fights and heals diseases. Things like diet, sleep, physical activity, fitness and stress have a big impact on hormone levels as well as overall health, making a significant difference in dental health. Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle to ensure good hormone balance and then eventually reap the benefits of good dental health. 

Practice Good Oral Care and Visit Your Dentist 

Even when you lead a healthy lifestyle, it is still important that you maintain good oral habits and regularly visit your dentist. Remember that good oral hygiene contributes to both a great smile and good overall health. Brushing, flossing and professional cleanings prevent dental problems like infection, gum disease, bone loss and heart disease. For a full dental treatment, visit your dentist at least twice a year. These professionals can solve your existing dental problems, and prevent future oral problems from developing.
