Case In Point Is That Of Richard Riddell Founder And Proprietor Of Exam Confidence LtdCase In Point Is That Of Richard Riddell Founder And Proprietor Of Exam Confidence Ltd

The writing of a personal statement is a pivotal time in any student’s academic career, where reaching the next rung of the educational ladder hinges, in part, on convincing your university of choice that you are worthy of a valuable place in their establishment, and capable of making the transition to higher education. Why is it then, that a variety of ‘one-man-band’, semi-retired teaching staff have taken the immoral task upon themselves to cheat pupils into university by writing their statements for them? Case in point is that of Richard Riddell, founder and proprietor of Exam Confidence Ltd. (www.examconfidence.co.uk). An originally noble business idea to help struggling school students boost their grades through a series of tutoring classes, has since diversified into the unethical practice of editing student UCAS applications. This spin-off from academic coaching is clearly an attempt to capitalise on the ever increasing scarcity of university places, as well as on the ‘inside-tips’ on UCAS applications, which come from being a member of the teaching fraternity.

As a senior teacher one would expect Mr Riddell to be well versed in the value of doing one’s own work and the consequences of falsification and plagiarism. However, with his band of merry men in tow (A.K.A. principal examining body members), he seems to think that cheating his young customers into university in return for payment is a perfectly acceptable business model. It is evident that the prospect of financial gain has clouded the judgement of these so-called pillars of society.

Under the guile of a “Social Enterprise” (as quoted from www.examconfidence.co.uk), Mr Riddell purports that his [deceitful] service offers “a full review and edit” facility for personal statements. This is undoubtedly a code for replacing a student’s original statement with a generic and nondescript piece of literature, making them submit work which isn’t theirs, and then charging for the privilege. Furthermore, by generating statements on such scale, one must consider the likelihood of plagiaristic and repetitive content. Parents must ask themselves, is this the sort of individual I want privately tutoring my children?

Richard Riddell’s dishonest practice conceals the true ability and character of a student and therefore vicariously ruins the chances of a better-qualified candidate, who has not had the benefit of any writing service. I would therefore challenge Mr Riddell’s lack of moral scruples and unprofessionalism, and remind him of his social responsibility as an educational tutor. I would also recommend that Exam Confidence Ltd. realign their moral compass, and stay faithful to their original, commendable business of exam tutoring.
