One of the services offered by social media marketing consultancy companies is that of reputation management and recovery. This recognizes the fact that social media is powerful on its own right because people could be talking about you and what you do. Somebody could be complaining about you. Somebody could be praising you. Somebody could be suggesting how you could be better. If there are people talking this way about you, wouldn't it be better if you know both the good and bad things being said about you so that you could manage these kinds of comments by thwarting the negative and highlighting the positive while putting in mind the suggestions of people?

The correct way of using the social media is to monitor and respond. The advent of social media has made it so easy to have everyone talking or having conversations about anything and everything under the sun and that includes you or your company. Thus, there is a need to monitor and be part of the conversation so you can do something to turn the negative into positive. Businesses need to protect their online reputation because branding by association is crucial to brand equity. A social media consultancy firm can actually provide tips and training or coaching on where to begin as well as how to build one's online reputation. The consultancy firm could also do the reviewing of any social network conversations that are already taking place. Based on this, it could be discussed with the client how they would proceed with the "reputation recovery mode."

Other work scopes that a social media consultancy firm could provide for a client include reviewing one's online name and packaging a set of requirements that would best promote one's brand name. The consultancy firm could also include the appropriation of specific profile information that would help heighten brand equity and improve one's reputation.

An example of a client who might need a reputation management and recovery service from a consultancy firm is a politician who is currently running for re-election and wants to utilize social media to capture the youth market. The firm should first review the strengths and weaknesses of the politician. They can then build his online presence around the positive traits. Is he known for his pro-poor programs? Is he known for his academic achievements? Is he known for his work ethic? How about the negative comments said about him? Did people comment on online sites that he is a snob? Did they mention his involvement in some anomalies? Is he close friends with some people of ill repute?

After gauging these facts, the consultancy firm could then move on to the reputation recovery mode. They could for instance post pictures online of the politician visiting and "being one" with the slum dwellers to highlight his pro poor stance and associate him with the masses instead of the unscrupulous friends surrounding him. The firm could even hire someone to answer back those negative comments about the politician online. Once there is a counter strategy to the negative attacks, reputation management and recovery would be possible.
