A toothache is a sign that we might have been neglecting oral hygiene – brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist. It can be a result of several things, but the first thing that we want is pain relief. It can be a cavity, abscess, cracked tooth or a dislodged previous filling. Whatever the cause is, you should find quick relief with many pain relief options available today.

Although the usual pain medicines readily available over the counter can give you what you are after, it might be a good idea to first try safer and cheaper alternatives. There are several home remedies that have proven to be effective in giving you pain relief. Check out a few of the most popular ones below and try them out if you find yourself suffering from a toothache.

Toothache Home Remedy: Salt Water

Widely known as a cleansing solution, salt water can provide pain relief when swished around in the mouth. Salt can cleanse the tooth area and prevent swelling. Simply dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiling water and gargle it for at least 30 seconds as often as necessary.

Toothache Home Remedy: Hydrogen Peroxide

Rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to provide pain relief and clean the gums around the affected tooth at the same time. This solution can kill a wide range of bacteria and help manage the discomfort until you can visit your dentist or any health professional.

Toothache Home Remedy: Spices

There are some common household spices that contain healing properties and can therefore help in relieving a toothaches. They might be part of old wives tales but they continue to work until now. Some of these include garlic, citrus, leaves, roots, oils, and vanilla and other flavor extracts.

Toothache Home Remedy: Ice

Perhaps one of the most common home remedies for pain is ice. Massaging the cold area or applying a pack of cold ice can be of great help. Take note, though, that a toothache caused by an exposed nerve might be aggravated by pain when it is exposed to extreme cold.

Despite their promises of pain relief, it is important that you should talk to your dentist first about your toothache. It can be a sign of hidden problems that might prove dangerous when left untreated. So even when you find relief from home remedies, it is highly recommended that you still get it checked out by a health professional.
